Why are the search engine results different for different people in different locations for the same keyword?

A friend of mine searched for the same keyword I did and said the results were not the same. He sees websites that I do not see in the results and vise versa? My website shows up #4 on my computer but it shows up on page 2 (#12) on his computer. Why does that happen?

Search results will always vary from location to location.

Imagine this: Everyone in the world all at once performs a search on Google. What would happen? Their systems would overload and crash, right?

They have multiple computers all around the world and copy the search results from a main database to all of the other machines.

In some cases, one machine may not be as up to date as another and that is why you may see different results than your friend. Your friend may be seeing the newer/older results for that specific keyword and vise versa. If you are both in separate countries, that may also affect the results you both see.
