How do I avoid losing all of my traffic after changing or switching domain names?

I want to change my domain name because some company is threatening to sue me over copyright laws. I am using their name in my domain name. How can I avoid losing all of the links and traffic I have built up to date?

If you can, do not take down the old domain. Put up a new domain with a new name on a new host.

If you can't do that, keep the old website up until the new website is up, then add a permanent 301 redirect from the old website to the new one. Subsequently, reach out to anyone linking to the old site and request they adjust all links to point to your new website.
