Are there any characters that are bad in the meta tags?

I like to use quotes and & signs in my meta tags. Does using symbols or other ASCII characters other than letters negatively affect my rankings?

I’m not sure and haven’t researched this much because we always avoid characters in our meta tags just in case Google has a hard time interpreting the data to avoid any potential confusion or stoppage by Google. I’m not sure if Google functions similar to C+ or other programming languages, in that it may stop reading all subsequent code once it finds something it doesn’t understand.
